Dr. Vivian Robinson (The Inventor)

Dr Vivian Robinson is one of Australia’s leading and most successful independent research scientists. He has worked his whole professional life in Australia, forgoing overseas posts.

Gaining his PhD in Thin Film Physics at the age of 25, he worked for the CSIRO before moving to the University of New South Wales in 1970.  There he ran an electron microscope facility for 14 years. During that time, Viv developed a number of now widely used techniques, especially involving backscattered electron detectors and the ability to look at specimens in their natural state in an electron microscope.  These breakthroughs revolutionised electron microscopy.

So successful and widespread were his applications, that he left the University in 1984 and ran a private company to handle the world-wide demand he had created.  He bought the company a few years later.  The ‘Robinson Detector’ became the standard of excellence in the profession. Some of the world-renown companies who used the Robinson Detector included Zeiss, Hitachi, Toshiba and Philips, all incorporating his detector into their microscopes.  His list of end user customers included many of the world’s large name manufacturing companies, universities and government research laboratories.  In its own way, his equipment was used by the electronics industry to help work out the dimensions of the micro-electronic circuits they were making.  Recently he was approached by a University to work on a project with direct benefit to NASA. Most of his sales went overseas.
